I - II cc. The sign of an aquilifer’s unit is a lion skin. Aquilifer wears scale armor, belt decorated with plates and leather pteruges. There are “gladus”sword and “pugio” dagger on his right side; protecting attributes and leather caligae with drawstrings.
An aquila was the standard of a Roman legion formed in the shape of a gold or silver eagle which was the universal type used since 104 BC (Gaius Marius’ reform). Before that time, the wolf, boar, bull and horse were also used.
